The Sweet Science Society (S3):  Helping H.A.N.D.S.

Introduction
The Sweet Science Society (S3) is a nonprofit association dedicated to the advancement of under privileged children through the “sweet science” of boxing.   Through the dedication of caring professionals, The S3 focuses on academic achievement, physical fitness, and boxing as an art form.  Historically, boxing has always been used as a means of escaping poverty if one only examines the sports’ influence on African-Americans, Latin-Americans, Italian-Americans, Irish-Americans, and even Jewish immigrants in the 30’s.  As one of the most exciting and economically affordable sports in the world, S3 believes that its collection of dedicated teachers, counselors, personal trainers, chiropractors, and boxing coaches can have a positive effect on children in the inner city.  In addition, through the use of cross marketing with entertainers, athletes of other sports, and professional boxers themselves, S3 believes that they can enhance and promote the sport of boxing, generate brand awareness for our corporate sponsors, and create an environment of success for the children in our program.

The Organization
S3 was founded by Troy J. Hines in September 2009, 5 months after the birth of his “brain child” H.A.N.D.S. (Human Aggression Naturally Developed for Sport) Boxing Show, which is being developed as a market expansion tool for the sport of boxing .

Our management team consists of a board of directors and officers of S3 working closely with the executive director.   In addition, we have interlocked with a selective group of consultants to assist in our focused approach to meeting educational, socio-behavioral, and physical fitness needs of our participants.

Services
S3 provides academic, physical fitness, and boxing services to children 12-17 years of age who show intellectual promise, but come from challenged financial backgrounds.  The balanced structure of our program emphasizes academics and counseling for our first hour, and physical fitness and boxing during the last. Indirectly serving as a “latch-key” program, S3 provides tutoring, mentoring, and conflict resolution strategies to our talented but “at-risk” youth.   This includes teaching assistants and socio-behavioral specialists from local colleges, to assist our children in their state curriculum course work, and coping skills to deal with the unique pressures of the inner city.

Our physical fitness program is a direct reflection of the Sanus Corpus philosophy of our Executive Director, B.S. Kinesiological Science—University of Maryland, who has owned and operated Soundbody Services, LLC (www.soundbodyservices.com) for 8 years.
